At Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport, the safety of our passengers is our top priority. Below are important safety tips to help you and your fellow travelers navigate safely and securely through the airport. From riding escalators and elevators to managing your luggage, parking safely and handling firearms, these guidelines are designed to make your airport experience smooth and secure.

Escalator Safety Tips

  • Observe the direction of the moving step and step on and off with extra care.
  • Always face forward and keep one hand free to grip the handrail firmly.
  • Hold children's hands on escalators and do not allow them to sit or play on or near the steps.
  • Do not take wheelchairs, electric scooters, strollers, hand carts, luggage carts or similar items on the escalator. If you have multiple bags, use the elevator.
  • Keep loose clothing clear of steps and sides.
  • Step on and off quickly and move away from the area to give those behind you more room. Senior citizens should pay particular attention to balance while getting on and off an escalator.
  • In case of an accident, push one of the "stop" buttons, located at the top and bottom of the escalator, to stop the escalator.

Elevator Safety Tips.

  • Allow passengers to exit before entering the elevator.
  • Step over the gap between the door and the floor.
  • Stand clear of the elevator doors and keep clothing and belongings away from the opening.
  • Hold the handrail, if you need help with stability.
  • Do not overcrowd the elevator beyond its weight capacity.
  • Use the elevator if you have a wheelchair, electric scooter, stroller, hand cart, luggage cart or multiple bags.
  • In case of emergency, use the alarm button or phone inside the elevator to call for help. Never attempt to leave a stalled elevator without assistance.

Bag Safety Tips

  • Upon arriving at the Airport, make sure your luggage is intact. Avoid packing expensive items in checked luggage to reduce the risk of theft or damage.
  • Always keep your bags and luggage within your sight and close to you; don't leave your belongings unattended at any time.
  • Distribute weight evenly across your bags to avoid strain and ensure easy handling.
  • Make sure all zippers and fastenings are secure to prevent items from falling out.
  • Clearly label your bags with your contact information to aid in recovery if lost.
  • Be at the baggage claim carousel when your bags arrive after a flight.
  • Use luggage carts or ask for assistance if your bags are too heavy.
  • Immediately report anything that looks out of place to airport security or staff.
  • If any items are stolen, report them to the police as soon as possible.

Parking Safety Tips

  • Be aware of your surroundings when walking to and from your vehicle.
  • Choose well-lit parking spots, especially during evening or night hours.
  • Always lock your vehicle and make sure windows are closed.
  • Leave valuables at home or take them with you. If you have to store valuables in your vehicle, make sure they are out of sight.
  • Have your keys in hand before reaching your vehicle to avoid delays in unlocking.
  • Call 9-1-1 if you see any suspicious activity.

Firearm Safety Tips

  • Follow TSA Guidelines for transporting firearms and ammunition. Each airline also has directions on how to pack firearms, so be sure to check with your airline guidelines too.
  • All firearms must be declared to the airline during check-in.
  • Do not bring firearms or other unauthorized items through the security checkpoint.
  • Familiarize yourself with federal, state and local laws regarding firearm transportation.
